NUMBER OF CITY SENIORS TO BENEFIT FROM FARMERS MARKET VOUCHERS MORE THAN DOUBLES
(7/23/2008) NEW HAVEN- The State of Connecticut Department of Agriculture has issued an increase in the allotment of farmers market coupons for the City of New Haven. New Haven has been receiving 1,600 farmers market coupon booklets annually to distribute to City seniors. However, this year, more than 5,000 booklets are being made available to benefit New Haven seniors. Farmers Market Coupon booklets are issued to seniors age 62 and older who have a maximum household income of not more than 185 percent of the annual poverty guidelines and are New Haven residents which translates to an income limit of $18,130 for an individual and $24,420 for a family of two or more.
The coupon booklets carry a value of $15 for use at CitySeed Farmers Markets which are held:
City Hall Wednesdays 11:00 – 3:00
Fairhaven Thursdays 3:00 – 7:00
Wooster Square Saturday 9:00 – 1:00
Edgewood Park Sunday 10:00 – 2:00
“We are pleased with the increase in coupon booklets. Each year we ask for more booklets for our seniors and the State Dept. of Agriculture met our request this year,” said Darcey Cobbs, Director of Elderly Services for the City of New Haven. “This means that more seniors will have access to healthy fruits and vegetables from local Farmers Markets. In addition, this helps to further support our local farmers.”
The booklets will be distributed through the City of New Haven’s six senior centers on Wednesdays and Fridays only.
